BRAVES Homeschool Program

What is BRAVES?

BRAVES (Building Remote Access to Virtual Education and Support) is a correspondence program and part of the Hoonah School District. Our mission is to deliver a quality education that inspires students and provides them diverse learning experiences while striving to ensure that all students feel safe and supported.

How It Works

Step 1: Choose a Pathway

  • Fully Online
  • Hybrid Intensive
  • Hybrid Class-Based

Step 2: Choose an Emphasis

Cultural Emphasis
Tlingit language + cultural classes, song & dance
Global Emphasis
World language of choice, global cultural connections

Mix and match! Any pathway works with any emphasis.

Learning Pathways

Fully Online
  • Self-paced at home
  • Weekly learning targets, teacher monitors progress

Best for

Independent learners

Hybrid Intensive
  • Online coursework
  • Week-long in-person intensives for immersive learning

Best for

Flexible + experiential

Hybrid Class-Based
  • Mostly online
  • Attend school for targeted class instruction or labs

Best for

Learners who need support in some subjects

We are working with UAS to offer a Tlingit course!

Graduation requirements will be discussed during the Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) meeting, along with how your student will meet those requirements.

We accept most curricula that isn't faith based, and are open to family or location additions of language and curriculum choices. Additionally we are happy to include recommendations during the ILP meeting.

How This Model Works

Same Standards, Same Diploma

All pathways and emphases lead to the same credits and graduation requirements.

Learn the Way You Learn Best

Students choose a pathway that fits their learning style: independent, collaborative, or a mix. Each student has an ILP.

Rooted in Culture

Learning emphases connect instruction to culture.

Changes are Supported

Families can switch pathways or emphases at quarter or semester breaks with support from a success coach.
