Special Education Program

Our Commitment

Hoonah City School District is dedicated to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential. Our Special Education Program provides individualized supports and services so students with disabilities can access learning, grow their independence, and participate actively in our school community.

Who We Serve

We support students ages 3–21 who qualify for services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Eligibility is determined by a comprehensive evaluation and a team decision.

Our Services

Our district offers a continuum of services designed to meet each learner’s unique needs, which may include:

  • Specially Designed Instruction
  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Positive Behavioral Supports (PBIS)
  • Assistive Technology
  • Paraprofessional Support
  • Transition Services for Middle & High School Students

Whenever possible, services are delivered in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) so students can learn alongside their peers.

Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)

Each eligible student receives an Individualized Education Plan that outlines goals, supports, accommodations, and modifications. Families are essential partners in this process, and IEP teams meet at least annually to review progress and adjust services.

Family & Community Partnership

We value strong relationships with families. Open communication, transparency, and collaboration are central to our work. We encourage parents and caregivers to reach out at any time with questions or concerns.
