The Board of Education for the Hoonah City School District is pleased to announce their choice for a new Superintendent, Helen Cheek, beginning on July 1, 2023. The Board wishes to express their sincere thanks to everyone who participated and supported the Superintendent search process.

Ms. Cheek currently serves as the Superintendent of the Iditarod Area School District. Ms. Cheek has been in administration since 2002. Before this role, she was the Director of Grants/Project Director of the Career and Technical Education Center in the Yukon Flats School District. Ms. Cheek has an Associate Degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland, a Bachelor of Science in Workforce Education and Curriculum Development from Southern Illinois University, a Master in Education from City University, and a Superintendents Endorsement from the University of Alaska Southeast.

The Board met in executive session on May 11th to interview finalists and deliberate the results of the interviews. The Board discussed the appointment of a superintendent from the finalist candidates. The Board took formal action in open session on May 11th and unanimously voted for the appointment of Helen Cheek.

Ms. Cheek made the following statement upon her appointment: "My family and I are very excited to begin this new adventure. My husband and granddaughter will be moving to Hoonah as soon as possible and looking forward to meeting the wonderful folks in the community.

I want to take this opportunity to thank The Board of Education for honoring me with this position. I know that together we can help our students soar."


The Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB) is contracted to conduct and facilitate the search for the Superintendent.
